Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he liked betting on numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming very competitive in these particular card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little bit and moved to New York to participate in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were difficult as he would play extensive hours and fail to win most times. He made some extra cash by being an runner for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could better his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more rest and focus even more on poker.

The actual improvement in his game happened when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would frequently challenge one another. He was able to access several of the best minds in chess. With their help, Howard would tweak his strategic thinking abilities. He applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit hold’em.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. She was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. He told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the best women players the poker world ever. Howard Lederer headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the successive decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
