Phil Ivey has been branded as the number one poker contender on the planet by most of the top professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to NJ before reaching turning 1. His grandpa showed him to penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was addicted to poker and wanted to pickup anything he possibly could about poker. He routinely told his elders that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil did not allow the detrimental comments from other people destroy his ambition of being one of the strongest poker players in the world.
He started playing seriously after getting a false ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his techniques at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The initial number of years for him were a teaching period and coming away with a win wasn’t a regular thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved two final tables and won his first WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the final table he destroyed a number of the better known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his game to the next level and moved out west to Vegas. Phil continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Ivey credits his success to dedication and an immeasurable love for the game of poker. Phil states that he is picking up skills every day and is incredibly humble about his success. Phil admits to making mistakes every single session of poker and always aspires to improve.
Despite the fact that Ivey has won some big-time tournaments, he likes destroying cash games on a normal basis.
