Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed participating in different card games at a young age. He found himself getting very competitive in these card games while playing his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little while and relocated to New York to compete in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were difficult as he would play many hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He earned some extra money by being an runner for the poker players. He believed he could better his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more sleep and concentrate more on the game.

The actual improvement in his abilities happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would regularly play against each other. Howard was able to access some of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would hone his cunning thinking skills. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of No-Limit holdem.

He also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct choice. He told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest female players the poker world today. Howard moved to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and played money games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
