In Texas Holdem, the first step is to get the game started, and for this the competitors put out a set sum of cash. ‘Posting the blinds’ is the commonly used term for this play. In the next step, the croupier shuffles the deck of cards and deals out two cards face down to each player. A regular deck of 52 playing cards is used in the deal. Then there is the initial sequence of betting. This sequence is typically referred to as a "pre-flop".

After the 1st wagering sequence, the top card is discarded. This tossed aside card is the "burn card", and this is done to guarantee that there is no corruption. The following 3 cards are then revealed face up on the table. These cards are referred to as ‘the flop’. Now comes a second sequence of betting, after which the dealer burns another card and deals 1 more card onto the table. Following this, players can utilize the 6th card to form a five-card poker hand.

Another round of wagering follows, and in a good many types of games, here is where the wager size doubles. There is a further round of burning a card, and a closing deal of a card face-up on the poker table. This is referred to as the "river". Players can now use any of the five cards on the table, or the 2 cards that they are holding, to form a 5card poker hand.

To wrap it up there’s a further round of betting. Then, all the players left begin to show their hands. This is referred to as the "showdown". Obviously, the competitor who holds the highest hand is the winner. When players have tied hands a sharing of the pot is considered.

Holdem is a basic game to pickup, but to acquire knowledge it requires a large amount of studying.
